Net Worth Calculator

Real wealth is a person's "Net Worth." Net worth is the dollar value of everything you own minus the dollar value of everything you owe

Net worth is not to be confused with the TRAPPINGS of wealth; that is to say what others see that you are-at least temporarily-in possession of. A person can easily live in a huge new house, drive the latest very expensive car, sparkle with jewelry, wear the latest styles and still have a negative net worth. Again, net worth is wealth, expensive possessions aren't.

This little exercise will help you find your net worth and, while the amount might not be all that much, most people have some positive wealth. When you fill in the spaces in the dialog boxes below, make the best estimates you can off the top of your head. That'll be close enough for now.

  • If your net worth is a positive amount, keep building it.
  • If your net worth is a negative amount, that means you'll need to plan for reducing your debt level.
  • It's a good idea to do a net worth calculation, maybe more detailed than this one, at regular intervals; quarterly or at least annually, so you can track your progress. It's like doing a balance sheet for your household.
  • Remember: Wealth is Net Worth, not expensive toys.
